There are two kinds of Estate Planning: Inheritance Planning and Legacy Planning

The most common form of estate planning, which is inheritance planning, is designed around a set of legal and tax principles to pass financial assets and personal items ('The Stuff' you own) to your heirs. We can offer general trust planning, education of additional, more complex trusts, and a network of attorneys to help. In larger estates, a major focus is to minimize the estate and inheritance taxes so more money can go to family or charities. In many ways, the focus of inheritance planning is on the money and is both technical and rules-based.

Legacy Planning starts the moment you have children or establish relationships with family member heirs that will inherit from you. Legacy planning focuses on building strong, healthy relationships with the values and communication skills to practice LOFOBI (“Looking Out For Others' Best Interests”). It takes time and effort to learn these skills, as many of us are not born with a natural ability to communicate this way. If you want to leave a healthy legacy, be prepared to put in a lifetime of work to build these relationships so your heirs are prepared to receive the inheritance and will use it to leave an even better legacy to their heirs. Legacy planning is focused on people and relationships, and is coaching-based to help you improve your communication and relationship skills.
Business Transition Planning and Coaching
How can I effectively transfer my business to my children, employees, or my partners?
You have spent many years building your business and it is probably your largest asset. You need a strategy to transfer the ownership and management to a family member, employee(s), or a partner. We can help you put all these pieces together to reap the financial rewards of a lifetime of hard work and preserve your legacy.
We work closely with business owners to help them determine how to appropriately transition the ownership, leadership, and management of their business. We help leaders develop the skills required to lead the family and the business into a successful future. One of the first steps when the business is still founder-lead is to help make the founder/owner a passive owner and build a management system that allows them to let go of day-to-day operations. Once this is done, it opens the door to more options for ownership transitions. This involves planning from the personal and business perspective to determine which option can better suit the needs of the individual owners and their families.
Once the family's goals and objectives for the preservation and transfer of their business and wealth are clear, then we can begin to put it all together to create a successful legacy. These options could include selling to a 3rd party, managers, partners, an ESOP, or family members. It could also involve family transitions via estate planning and gifting.
This work is primarily coaching based, rather than being an expert advisor. Most of this work involves helping you see things differently, and do things differently, to work towards different results.
